Mothballed Ravenswood unit in New York kicking back into service

Repairs were made to fix 2011 damage

The TC Ravenswood LLC affiliate of TransCanada filed an April 30 notice with the New York State Public Service Commission and other parties that its mothballed GT 3-4 unit, with 42.9 MW of nameplate capacity, is being returned to service for this summer.

TC Ravenswood had filed an August 2011 notice with these parties on its plans to mothball this unit. Since then, repairs have been undertaken and the unit will be ready for service during the 2014 summer season, the company said. Testing and other coordination issues will be worked out with the New York ISO and other parties.

In the August 2011 notice, the company said: "On Wednesday June 8th, 2011 TC Ravenswood, LLC ('TC Ravenswood') GT Unit 3-4 (the "Unit") was on line and generating approximately 30 MWs when the Unit tripped off-line due to a generator cooling fan blade failure and subsequent fire. The Unit has been in a forced outage status since that time. At this time TC Ravenswood does not intend to repair the Unit, is removing it from the NYISO installed capacity market and is placing it in mothball status due to the uncertainty surrounding the NYISO installed capacity markets and uncertainty with respect to repair feasibility and cost."

"Ravenswood Generating Station (Ravenswood), located in Queens, NY, is a 2,480 megawatt (MW) power plant that consists of multiple units employing steam turbine, combined cycle and combustion turbine technology," said a fact sheet on the TransCanada website. The plant has 21 units employing steam turbine, combined cycle and combustion turbine technology: Units 10, 20 and 30 consist of gas/oil-fired boilers; Unit 40 is a dual-fuel-capable combined cycle unit; and there are 17 dual-fuel-capable combustion turbines.
