The Honourable Michelle Rempel, Minister of State (Western Economic Diversification), on behalf of the Honourable Greg Rickford, Canada's Minister of Natural Resources and Minister for the Federal Economic Development Initiative for Northern Ontario, today addressed the Canadian Hydropower Association Forum 2014, where she emphasized the importance of the hydropower industry to Canada's economic prosperity.

Quick Facts

  • Canada has one of the cleanest electricity systems in the world and is the world's third-largest producer of hydroelectricity.
  • Over three-quarters of Canada's power comes from emission-free sources - about 60 percent from hydropower, 14 percent from nuclear energy and about three percent from non-hydro renewable energies - for a total of approximately 77 percent.
  • Canada has strengthened its position as a world leader in clean electricity generation by becoming the first major coal user to ban construction of traditional coal-fired electricity generation units.

"Canadian hydropower is the largest source of clean and renewable power in North America, contributing over 60% of Canada's electricity production and creating jobs and economic growth. Our Government recognizes the valuable contributions the hydropower industry makes to the lives and livelihoods of Canadians."
