AltaGas plans 95-MW, gas-fired peaker for Alberta's Industrial Heartland

Project would use two General Electric turbines

AltaGas Holding Inc. applied Nov. 30 to the Alberta Utilities Commission for approval on the construction and operation of a nominal 95-MW natural gas-fired peaker plant.

The AltaGas Kent Energy Plant will use two 47 MW simple-cycle natural gas-fired SPRINT turbine generators packaged by General Electric (GE) to generate electricity. The AltaGas Kent Energy Plant will generate approximately 200 000 MWh/y of electricity for use during times of high power demand. The plant will generate approximately 200 000 MWh/year for use during times of high power demand. 

The project would include a new switching substation (called Kent 3483), located off-site, and a new 144-KV transmission line. "AltaGas has been in discussion with the AESO and ATCO Electric regarding the Kent 3483 Substation and the new 144 kV transmission line," the application noted. "ATCO is expected to file an application for the substation, new transmission line and interconnection to the Alberta Interconnected Electrical System (AIES). Operation of the AltaGas Kent Energy Plant will not commence until the associated connection facilities are approved by the AESO."

The AltaGas Kent Energy Plant will be located adjacent to the existing AltaGas Kent Energy Gas Plant Site, located within the Alberta Industrial Heartland, approximately 2.25 kilometres southwest of the City of Cold Lake, Alberta, in the municipal district of Sturgeon County.

The project will use natural gas as fuel for the industrial gas turbines. The natural gas will be delivered to the AltaGas Kent Energy Plant by an existing TransCanada pipeline.
